General Advice

The Tips in This Guide are Ideal for Reef Tanks, but can be Applied to Almost any Aquarium Style

Stability is THE Real Challenge

Let's face it; anything created outside of its natural environment tends to fall apart (picture an ice cream cone on a hot day). Entropy is a real pain to combat, especially when what's at risk is your precious aquarium tenants.

Reef aquariums are closed environments, leaving all the chores necessary for success up to you. Depending on some key features of your setup, these can be as easy as making a cup of coffee, or as tedious as doing your taxes. The choice is yours, and technology is making the job easier by the day.

With some focus on a few key aspects we can help you design a stable aquarium that fits your lifestyle AND budget!

Key Concepts

Four Areas of Focus:

  1. Lighting - Can your Corals Photosynthesize the Light You're Providing?
  2. Filtration - Do You Have Adequate Mechanical and Biological Filtration?
  3. Flow -  Is the Display and Filtration Flow Properly Adjusted?
  4. Parameters - Are Your Nutrient Readings Within Norms and Stable?

Our Ideal Parameters (For Mixed Reefs)

  • Temperature: 78°f or 26°c
  • Specific Gravity: 1.024
  • PH: 8 - 8.4
  • KH: 8 - 12 dKH
  • Calcium: 400 PPM
  • Magnesium: 1300 PPM
  • Iodine: 0.065 PPM
  • Ammonia: 0.0 PPM
  • Nitrite: 0.0 PPM
  • Nitrate: 0 - 20 PPM
  • Phosphate: 0 - 0.1 PPM

These Numbers are Meant as a Guideline and are Generally Not a Strict Requirement. Systems Tend to Find a Settling Point After Several Months Where Stability Starts to Take Hold. Do Not Chase "Perfect" Numbers. Your Goal Should be Happy Looking Coral, be Mindful of What They Tell You.
